HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRISTIAN
September 2020 Newsletter
Cristian Alexander Rivera   9/13/02 – 1/25/09

For many people, September serves as a month of remembrance and transition. As we go into this new season, we remember that it’s now been over 6 months since this pandemic turned our world upside down. We remember the turmoil that our country has been through – and still continues to endure – as nature around us begins to show change. We remember all the happy moments that Summer gifted us with and hold them in our hearts as children return to school. We remember all the heroes and innocent lives we lost during 9/11.

Here at CRF, we especially remember Cristian as we honor his birthday every September 13. This year, Cristian would have been 18 years old had he not lost his life to DIPG. Turning 18 opens up so many exciting and new possibilities for young people. Our hearts feel heavy when we realize that if Cristian were with us today, he may have been starting his first semester of college. Because of DIPG, many families feel a deep-rooted gap in wondering what could have become of their children had they lived through this disease.

Although we often embark on the beginning of September with some sadness, we always remember that’s not how Cristian would have wanted us to proceed. Remembering Cristian’s strength always helps us to move forward and continue to work towards saving lives. This month, we were introduced to a young boy named Emiliano and have fallen in love with him. We’re sure you will too.

Save Emiliano
September 2020 Newsletter September 2020 Newsletter

Emiliano is 2-years-old and lives in Mexico with his loving parents, Andrea and Josue. He’s a playful little boy who’s now learning to speak his first words. He loves watching TV – his favorite cartoon is Mickey Mouse and his favorite movie to watch is Coco. Andrea and Josue were overcome with joy and love to welcome their new baby into their lives. 2020 has truly been a difficult year for all of us, but it’s turned out to be especially challenging for Emiliano and his parents as they learned that he was diagnosed with DIPG earlier this year. You can check out Emiliano’s remarkable journey by following him on Instagram @saveemiliano. After facing many obstacles, the Cristian Rivera Foundation has been able to bring Emiliano and his family to NYC to receive treatment on our trial. Please stay tuned as we keep you updated on Emiliano’s progress!

new additions to the CRF team

Here at the CRF, we realize we are only able to do the work we do through the combined efforts of many – particularly our donors, sponsors, board members, and our team members. With this thought, we’re delighted to announce a few new additions to the CRF team!

Hello, my name is Alex! I graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Criminal Justice, but quickly fell into sports as a professional entertainer and performer. My biggest passion is being able to help others and give back to the community. The Cristian Rivera Foundation is amazing for being there for the families and children in need. I am so grateful for this opportunity to work with amazing people.

Hi! My name is AnneMarie and I graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2017 with a degree in Business and Organizational Communication, with a minor in Visual Studies. During my junior summer of college, I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa where I had the humbling opportunity to learn and work with a nonprofit organization to help promote their mission. This experience sparked my interest in learning more about nonprofits! Additionally, I have had some experience in Account Management and Client Service since I have graduated. Most recently in 2019, I spent a year in Auckland, New Zealand working as an Au Pair for a family with two young children. I am passionate about and serving others and I am very excited to be a part of this wonderful and giving team! I know that this foundation has a bright future!

Hello! My name is Lily Abadir. I am a sophomore studying Strategic Communications and Nonprofit Management at Kansas State University. When I was younger, my dream job was to be a pediatric oncologist. Very quickly, I learned my skills and abilities would be much more beneficial in another field and I have fallen in love with the nonprofit sector. The Cristian Rivera Foundation’s mission hit a special place in my heart. The Foundation’s mission mixed with their passion for serving others matches my enthusiasm for wanting to improve others’ lives. I am so thankful to have the chance to work with this passionate, go-getting team.

Hi, my name is Tori Montes! I am currently a junior at Arizona State University, studying Organizational Leadership with a minor in Nonprofit management. When I graduate I would love to stay in the nonprofit sector, which is why I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with Cristian Rivera Foundation right now! This foundation focuses on children and families going through a difficult time while keeping hope alive! I am thrilled to be apart of such a dedicated team.
