Thanksgiving to New Years marks such a busy time for most Americans. From end-of year work schedules to last minute Christmas shopping, it is easy to become distracted and stressed from all the running around. Although, this year looks a little different than most because it has allowed us to slow down and appreciate the little things. There will be less extended family gatherings and special events to attend and this allows people to live in the moment. Here are some tips on how to be more present this season.
Be Intentional: Time is limited and so it should be spent with intention. This means being mindful of everything you do. Prioritize making time for loved ones and for self-care. Put aside your phone and all distractions. Make the effort to do things that you enjoy. Living intentionally allows people to better understand themselves and their loved ones all while making lasting memories.
Practice Active Listening: Pay full attention to the speaker in order to gain a deeper understanding of what is being communicated. Reflect on what the speaker is saying and ask questions when they arise. This helps to build connections and trust and avoid misunderstanding down the road. It also shows the speaker that you care about what they are saying.
Practice Gratitude: Write down three things you are grateful for every night. This ends the day on a positive note. You don’t even have to write them down, although I find it nice to reflect on these moments on particularly difficult days. Just taking time at the end of the day to recognize your gratitude and give thanks is important for your mental and emotional health.
The holiday season always seems to fly by. This time of the year can quickly become overwhelming for many people. It is important to be mindful of how you are spending your time and try to live with intention. Being fully present allows people to focus on what is important and not be distracted by all the little things. I hope this has given you some helpful tips on how you can be more present this season.
