Happy Summer! Check out the CRF July 2020 Newsletter

July 2020 Newsletter

Cristian Rivera Foundation 2020 July Newsletter

For the Cristian Rivera Foundation, the month of July has been quite eventful. As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to fluctuate, we have been persevering and working diligently to continue to raise awareness and funds for DIPG and DIPG research.

This month we had our first ever Virtual CRF 5K which turned out to be a great success due to the participation and commitment of our board members and supporters! This year we were able to raise the most amount of money that we’ve raised at one of our 5Ks yet! We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish that without the help and dedication of our good-hearted supporters and we truly can’t thank you enough! Even though the 5K was virtual this year, we still had a competition and we’d like to recognize our 3 fastest runners from the event: Bruno Reljic (1st), Rodrigo Diaz (2nd), and Salvino Architto (3rd)! Congratulations on your exceptional effort and athleticism and congratulations to all who participated for your hard work and success! Look out for our video recap of our Virtual 5K featuring all our participants coming soon.

Even though our 5K is over and we still can’t meet in person right now, we can all still work hard for the cause! There are many ways to stay involved including donating, raising money for DIPG, and spreading the word about DIPG and our foundation! You can also support the cause by purchasing merchandise from our CRF store! The store is always up and running with the sale of items like wristbands, t-shirts, and the Cristian’s Journey book. You can check out our CRF store here and stay tuned as new merchandise will be coming soon!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to have a child or family member diagnosed with DIPG? This month our CRF team members have been interviewing families affected by DIPG in hopes of being able to spread more information and understanding of this disease. The videos, stories, and posts from these interviews will be going up weekly for our Warrior Wednesday! Every family’s experience with DIPG is unique and it has been an incredible journey learning more about how we can support DIPG families. Check out our website for our first story on Kaitlyn Marie Garcia and our video interview with her family here. New stories and videos will be posted weekly on Wednesdays on our website and social media.

As the month of July comes to a close, summer is still in full swing. While it’s important for everyone to stay safe in the summer sun, for those living with DIPG and other forms of cancer, you have to be particularly safe in the summer. Some tips for staying safe in the sun include planning outdoor activities for times when the sun is not as intense, seeking shade, covering up, and getting checkups with a dermatologist. The most important sun safety tip is to use sunscreen, making sure to reapply after swimming or sweating!

Those are all our updates for the month of July! We hope to see you all soon but in the meantime, we hope all of you are staying safe and healthy! Until then, we love you 10! Full Steam Ahead!

Our Mission

The mission of the Cristian Rivera Foundation is to help find the cure for
Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable
and incurable brain stem tumor.

What is DIPG
(Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma)?

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma or DIPG, is a Rare, Inoperable Brain Stem Tumor that predominantly affects children between the ages of 2 and 10. Only 200-300 cases are discovered in the United States each year and because there is no cure, it’s young victims only have an average of 3-18 months to live, after they’ve been diagnosed. There are NO SURVIVORS.

Who is
The Cristian Rivera Foundation?

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) Non-Profit Organization that works tirelessly, in order to raise awareness and funds to one day put a STOP to this disease. The Cristian Rivera Foundation funds the work of Dr. Mark Souweidane of Weill Cornell Medical Center – Memorial Sloane (Kettering) Cancer Center and Dr. Oren Becher of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Lurie Cancer center at Northwestern University. Both Doctors are conducting promising research and trials that have shown promising results. We are CLOSE to a CURE!
