November Newsletter

On November 13th, 2019 we hosted the 11th Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Celebrity Gala at Capitale in New York City. Every year, we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to host this magical evening and to remember and share Cristian’s journey with all of you. The Cristian Rivera Foundation has proudly been able to change the fate of victims who suffer from DIPG and make the dream of a cure, achievable.

This year’s Gala was hosted by one of our Board of Directors and Anchor of NBC’s “Today in New York”, Darlene Rodriguez, and Cristian Rivera Foundation Chairman of the Board, Andy Epstein. This year’s Gala theme was Stars. Looking to the stars served as a reminder that if we continue to fight DIPG and relentlessly pursue a cure, we can give children the opportunity to become the stars they were meant to be. Through CRF’s efforts of raising awareness and financial support for DIPG research, we come closer every year. We are delighted to highlight some of our favorite moments throughout the evening:

  • We were honored to have several celebrities in attendance who support CRF and our mission, including Committee Members actor-comedian Kenan Thompson and actor Luis Guzman, NBC Anchor and CRF Board of Director Darlene Rodriguez, TV personality AJ Calloway, actor Ramon Rodriguez, actor Vincent Young, founder of the Guardian Angels Curtis Sliwa, NY Yankees and Mets baseball legend Dwight “Doc” Gooden, actress Annabella Sciorra, actor Bo Dietl, Randy Jones of The Village People, actor Joe Donofrio, Hip-Hop Legend Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon, famed journalist Michael Musto, and Associate Editor of Vanity Fair George Wayne.
  • We celebrated and honored DIPG survivor Lisha Ayala, the first patient to show promising results of Dr. Souweidane’s clinical trial. Lisha is now living with DIPG for 7 years with no tumor growth. There are now 2 other survivors showing results similar to Lisha’s.
  • We remembered DIPG Angel Lucas Harashima with the 2019 CRF Golden Wings Honor, which was accepted with moving words from his loving parents Hide and Sansan.
  • Our partner and hero, Dr. Mark Souweidane, presented Dr. Kathy Warren, a respected pediatric neuro-oncologist and DIPG researcher from the Dana Farber Institute, with the 2019 CRF Vision of Hope Award for her audacity and perseverance in the treacherous territory of finding the best ways to treat DIPG patients.
  • Actor and CRF Committee Member Luis Guzman along with actor Ramon Rodriguez presented the 2019 CRF Humanitarian Award to Breakdancing Legend Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon, for assisting victims of Hurricane Maria.
  • Committee Members Jesse Allison and Jarrad Seuferling presented the 2019 CRF Outstanding Service and Dedication Award to our loyal Committee Member Aldo Marin.
  • Dinner was filled with star-studded performances beginning with young Opera Singer Belangel who was introduced by the two “Docs”. One was Dr. Oren Becher, one of our medical partners, and the other was baseball legend Dwight “Doc” Gooden. Next, Grammy Award winning audio engineer and manager James Cruz along with CRF’s proud publicist Lizzie Grubman introduced the talented children of Ballet Hispanico. Finally, an electrifying performance was given by Hip-Hop violinists Svet and Tanya Tingarova who were introduced by Curtis Sliwa and Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield, Dr. Souweidane’s partner and another one of our heroes working to terminate DIPG.
  • An impromptu performance on the dance floor was given by Mad Stuntman of his hit song from Madagascar, “I Like to Move It, Move It”. He was able to get the whole room moving and took the party to another level!
  • The talented Christina Evangeline made our starry night vision come true with elegance and stunning décor. We had our most beautiful centerpieces and floral arrangements yet!
  • Kenan Thompson and John LaBarbera were our two biggest donors. This marks a few consecutive years where Kenan has been one of our biggest contributors. Thanks to their outstanding generosity, we can continue to provide important support to DIPG families.

The bulk of our funding from that evening came from generous donations, silent auction bids, and our thrilling live auction. During the live auction, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities were auctioned off such as dinner with Luis Guzman, SNL tickets, a Yankees on Field Experience, and Dinner Parties with renowned chefs Nick Lucci, Goya’s own Chef Fernando Desa, and Celebrity Chef Alex Garcia.

In addition, we auctioned off the ability to sponsor a summer fellow at Weill Cornell Medical Center, the chance to give a DIPG family the trip of their dreams through our Wishes Come True program, and the opportunity for a student to shadow the brilliant Dr. Mark Souweidane for one week.

As remarkable and successful as 2019 has been, the year is almost over! Every year we inch closer towards a cure. Perseverance is up to us in sustaining hope for DIPG children. It’s not too late to make a charitable contribution to the Cristian Rivera Foundation before the New Year.

Your contribution is tax deductible and will help fund DIPG clinical research and innovative clinical trials conducted by Dr. Mark Souweidane of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Weill Cornell Medical Center and Dr. Oren Becher at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Lurie Cancer center at Northwestern University. Please consider making a donation at the following link: cristianriverafoundation.org/donation.html

We would like to thank each and every one of you for the support you have offered to the Cristian Rivera Foundation. With all of you behind us, we’ve been able to make a profound difference in the lives of DIPG families and spread necessary awareness for DIPG – all in the hopes of giving children another chance at life.

Cristian Rivera Foundation 2019
October Newsletter

As the leaves start to fall, we can’t help but look forward to our 11th Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Celebrity Gala on Wednesday, November 13th. We are weeks away from the fantastic evening we have planned to help save the lives of beautiful children and cure DIPG. The theme of this year’s gala is STARS which holds a lot of meaning for us because the progress we make towards curing DIPG gives children the opportunity to fulfill their potential and become the stars they were meant to be.

We have an exciting night planned that starts at 6pm with a glowing, star-studded red carpet followed by cocktail hour and a sit-down dinner prepared by a Michelin-star chef. This year we’ve taken the gala to the next level as a black-tie affair with an open bar from 6-11pm. Throughout the evening we’ll be presenting awards, holding a live and a silent auction of rare items, and we’ve saved plenty of time to dance the night away.

We always reflect on the importance of the work we do by honoring the brave children whose lives were senselessly taken by DIPG. At this year’s gala, DIPG Angel Lucas Harashima is the 2019 recipient of the Cristian Rivera Foundation Golden Wings Award. His loving parents, Hide and Sansan, will grace us with their attendance in honor of their beloved son.

This year Dr. Mark Souweidane will be presenting Dr. Kathy Warren with our 2019 Vision & Hope Award for her determination to define new ways to deliver therapy to tumors that are tolerable for pediatric brain cancer patients. Dr. Warren is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric neuro-oncology from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA.

Last year’s recipient of the Cristian Rivera Foundation Humanitarian Award, actor Ramon Rodriguez, will present this year’s award to Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon for his humanitarian efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. “Crazy Legs” is a hip-hop pioneer, breakdancing legend, and a proud Bronx native. His partnerships with Red Bull and other local organizations have aided him in providing substantial hurricane relief effort.

Finally, last year’s winning committee members, Jesse Allison and Jarrad Seuferling, will present our beloved committee member Aldo Marin with the 2019 Cristian Rivera Foundation Outstanding Service and Dedication Award. Aldo is a respected music producer and former DJ whose phenomenal service to our foundation this year earned him this well-deserved award.

Another exceptional member of our board is our Committee Friend, Maggie Meehan. This month she is The Cristian Rivera Foundation highlighted Member of the Month for her incomparable passion towards our foundation’s mission.

Who is Maggie Meehan?
Maggie Meehan is a hospice social worker who wears many different hats but one of her most unique qualities that makes her shine above the rest is her unrivaled passion to help people and live life to the fullest. Maggie has been living in Belmar, NJ for the past two years since she obtained a job there at the Visiting Nurses Association. She is one of 6 girls in her family and her passion to help others came from the life-altering experience of losing her father at the young age of 16. Since then, Maggie has had a remarkable determination to advocate for those who need help in every way that she can.

What made you decide to get involved with the Cristian Rivera Foundation?
Maggie was inspired to work with CRF 2-3 years ago when she was offered a job with the foundation but pursued another work opportunity. Despite following a different path, Maggie and our founder, John “Gungie” Rivera, immediately developed a strong relationship and she felt motivated by John to help make a difference. “I loved the mission and how passionate John is in everything that he does. I wanted to continue to be involved with something really incredible and so I continued to volunteer and attend fantastic events, eventually I had the pleasure of becoming a Committee Friend,” – said Meehan.

How has the Cristian Rivera Foundation impacted your life?
Maggie said, “Being a part of the Cristian Rivera Foundation has given me many opportunities to meet other dedicated and passionate people with a similar mindset and to attend awe-inspiring events like the gala. The foundation has given me another sense of community with an additional group of fantastic people in my life,”.

How do you feel about the progress we’ve made as a foundation?
“We continue to go above and beyond supporting the children and families affected by DIPG but there’s always room for us to do more and I feel extremely excited for what the future has to hold for all of the incredible events, opportunities, and engagements we have planned for the future,”- said Maggie.

You don’t have to become a committee member to help fight against DIPG. There are so many things you can do that could potentially save lives today:

Cristian Rivera Foundation 2019
September Newsletter

As summer has drawn to a close, we look back at the fun-filled events we held to continue fueling funds towards our life-saving mission.

This past June we held our 2nd Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Full Steam Ahead 5K in Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx where our supporters came out and participated for our cause.  The walk was amazing and introduced our cause to new supporters.

We also spent a beautiful summer day on the water during our 4th Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Freestyle Flashback Boat Ride which featured a live performance by Reggae Legend, Red Fox, and was hosted by CRF supporter Che and our very own committee member Carlos Yepez.

Finally, during New York Fashion Week, on September 5th,  Taiwanese designer, Sami Chen of HappyFish Fashion, dedicated her show in honor of the Cristian Rivera Foundation. Also, our founder John Gungie Rivera’s very own daughter, Sophia, had the chance to grace NYC’s runway!

Each September we remember National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to create a deeper understanding of how cancer affects hundreds of thousands of children every year. DIPG affects 200-300 children per year which is considered “too rare” to receive government funding. The Cristian Rivera Foundation works relentlessly to fill that funding gap for promising research to support families who deserve hope and concrete options to move forward after diagnosis.

On Wednesday, November 13th, our 11th Annual Celebrity Fundraising Gala will be held in efforts to close this funding gap and boost research to the STARS – our theme for this year. It will be a delightful evening filled with prizes, auctions, live painting, performances, and dancing. It’s because of our rock star supporters and committee members that we can celebrate all of the progress we’ve made towards finding a cure. The event will be a black-tie affair held from 6pm – 11pm at Capitale on 130 Bowery, NYC and there’s still time to reserve your seat. https://cristianriverafoundation.org/gala-table-tickets.html

All proceeds from the gala will go directly towards the research of Dr. Souweidane and Dr. Oren Becher, two of the most highly esteemed pediatric oncologists in the nation. Other than attending the gala, here are the best ways you can make a difference:

Lastly, we commend our all-star board member, Andy Epstein, as he takes on his new position as Chairman of the Board for our foundation. His years of loyal perseverance in raising awareness as well as significant funds for our cause have catapulted him to a very special place on our board. Here is what Andy had to say about his new role: “I’m honored and humbled to have been named the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Cristian Rivera Foundation. I look forward to this new responsibility and to continue my efforts alongside John Rivera, our founder, to find a cure for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a deadly cancerous pediatric brain tumor that typically affects children between the ages of 1 & 9. Our foundation continues to raise awareness, support families in need and fund clinical trials. The surgeons and their medical teams that we support have made amazing strides in recent years and we now have three children in remission as a result of their efforts – a feat that was once considered impossible in our lifetime! Together alongside our Board of Directors, committee members, and our generous donors I am hopeful that we will one day find a cure”.

In addition, our dedicated committee member, Carlos Yepez, now sits on the Board of Directors. We honor Carlos for taking up this new responsibility and are excited for the progress we will make with his dynamic presence in this significant role. This is what Carlos had to say about the opportunity: “I am honored to be considered and appointed to the Cristian Rivera Foundations Board of Directors. In my 5 years of being with the organization, I have witnessed firsthand the progress and positive impact this organization has had on children and families affected by DIPG. The determination and passion delivered by the founder John Gungie Rivera and our Chairman of the Board Andy Epstein is contagious. I can honestly say this is one of the organizations that you can measure success and see the progress that the monies raised deliver. My commitment to this organization and those affected by DIPG remains stronger than ever. In this new role I look forward to making a positive impact and deliver on our goal of finding a cure. We have no excuses, no retreat, and no surrender. Let’s make it happen and win big”.

Please forward all of our happenings and giving opportunities to your families, friends, and colleagues and we look forward to seeing you at our gala in November! Full steam ahead!

Cristian Rivera Foundation 2019
January Newsletter

What a year it has been!
2018 was a year of growth, a year of change, and another year closer to finding the cure for DIPG!

Our Founder, John “Gungie” Rivera and committee member,
Robert Vazquez, collaborated to write a Children’s book entitled,
“Cristian’s Journey”.

The foundation’s first publication, “Cristian’s Journey”, was released to help raise awareness and inspire people to become involved with the work taking place globally for pediatric brain cancer research.

This beautiful story depicts Cristian’s journey of love and benevolence throughout the big city. This book is a tale about passion and never giving up despite the odds you may face. 100% of the proceeds of the purchase of this book will be donated to pediatric brain tumor/DIPG research and clinical trials. Have you checked it out? Follow this link to purchase the book cristianriverafoundation.org/cristiansjourney.html

In addition to “Cristian’s Journey”, our 2018 events included the following special events, all designed to raise awareness for pediatric brain cancer research:

We launched our 1st Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation “Full Steam Ahead” 5k Walk/Run.

We hosted our 3rd Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Freestyle Flashback Benefit Boat Ride.

We hosted our milestone 10th Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Celebrity Gala and honored a variety of celebrities and doctors for their philanthropy. (Check out the Photos and Video of this amazing event).

Thank you for your continued support by attending, sponsoring, and donating to the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Hosting these events have brought us to monumental milestone’s within the DIPG and medical community. As of the end of 2018, the Cristian Rivera Foundation has donated well over One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) to help support research and clinical trials for pediatric brain cancer/DIPG, and families who have been affected by this disease. Thank you for your love, passion, and for most importantly keeping these young children and their families in mind.

By your giving efforts, we are now closer than we’ve ever been to finding the cure for DIPG. Be proud- this is all possible because of You!

We would like to take the time to express our gratitude to some key players within our Foundation. Thank you to our Board of Directors, Committee Members, and our Committee Friends. Thank you all for your support, your deep desire to finding a cure for DIPG, and your genuine fellowship at our 2018 events. A very special thank you goes to Dr. Mark Souweidance and Dr. Oren Becher for working tirelessly towards finding a cure for DIPG. Without you all playing a major role within our foundation, none of these milestone’s and accomplishments would have been possible.

One of our clinical trial patients, Lisha, Ayala, has reached a monumental milestone in her life by reaching a 6 year mark with no growth in her tumor! She is living the life of a normal teenager and continues to give hope to the DIPG and medical community. Lisha Ayala reminds us that with faith, your support, and help from the medical community, nothing is impossible. We remain steadfast in doing all that we can to make sure the DIPG children and their families are diagnosis free and we are believing together that we are a few steps closer than we have ever been before.

As you can see, we left 2018 and started 2019 on a great note but January is always a sad month for The Cristian Rivera Foundation. First, Cristian was Diagnosed with DIPG on January 21st, 2007 and lost his Battle to DIPG just two short years later on, January 25th, 2009. Cristian would have been 16 years old had he’d been alive today. In honor of Cristian, our foundation will continue working the “Full Steam Ahead” mentality until we eradicate this disease from our world and no family has to suffer through the process of dealing with a child with DIPG.

You can be a part of the journey of finding a cure for DIPG, and make 2019 the year we say goodbye to this horrible disease. Simply stay connected with us. Join us at our events, share our journey with your family and friends, and please make efforts to our donation. Follow here to view our video that highlights our mission, vision, and objective of the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Speaking of great supporters and being part of our journey, The Cristian Rivera Foundation highlighted Member of the Month is Committee Friend, Vanessa Rodriguez. Using her experience and resources, Vanessa has been an incredible addition to our team and made valuable contributions to our goals through her hard work and dedication.

Who is Vanessa Rodriguez?
Vanessa, a native New Yorker, is a real estate sales agent with The Corcoran Group. She advises clients at all price points and stages, from first time home buyers to seasoned international investors. She loves the city and all things cultural. She attended St. Jean Baptiste High School in the Upper East Side and graduated from Columbia University. When she’s not working with her clients selling properties or partaking in community events, Vanessa enjoys the small things in life: exploring new restaurants, Broadway theatre, making dinner with family, and going for walks and runs with her 2 doggies – Remy, the Miniature Pinscher and Jimmy, the Boxer.

What does it mean to you to be a part of
the Cristian Rivera Foundation?

It means a lot! I have learned the importance and power in giving back. I am truly honored by being a part of the Cristian Rivera Foundation, it is truly amazing. With the Cristian Rivera Foundation, I am able to help raise awareness and most importantly, give back to DIPG patients. The DIPG patients are children who are helpless when it comes to their health. The least I can do is give back, raise awareness, and be proactive so people are more aware and knowledgeable about the diagnosis.

What are your proudest moments as a Cristian Rivera Foundation Committee Member?
Some of the many proudest moments I have being a committee member is being able to educate others on DIPG and help advocate to spread awareness. I am proud to share with others how DIPG affects children and how I can help find ways to help raise awareness. I am also proud of the contributions I have made in a short period of time through my donations and raising donations through my network.

All donations to the Cristian Rivera Foundation are tax deductible and money raised by the Cristian Rivera Foundation goes to the suffering families, doctors and hospitals working tirelessly towards finding a find for the deadly pediatric brain tumor known as DIPG.

Our MissionThe mission of the Cristian Rivera Foundation is to help find the cure for

What is DIPG
(Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma)?

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma or DIPG, is a Rare, Inoperable Brain Stem Tumor that predominantly affects children between the ages of 2 and 10. Only 200-300 cases are discovered in the United States each year and because there is no cure, it’s young victims only have an average of 3-18 months to live, after they’ve been diagnosed. There are NO SURVIVORS.
